MOUNTAINJAM ☮

Excited for Mountainjam this year. Outdoor 3-day festival put on by WDST Radio Woodstock that takes place the first weekend after Memorial Day. Over 40 bands and 4 stages at the base of Hunter Mountain.

Excited as always for Michael Franti but was stoked to see The London Souls and my beautiful step-sis Kari Spieler on the bill :) kinda wish Ray Lamontagne or Citizen Cope was gonna be there though..

The SD45 Adapter

The SD45 Adapter Pendant
The 45 Adapter is a small plastic piece that was invented to fit inside the center of a 45-record so it could be played on a turntable.

My father had always wanted one casted into a necklace piece and I noticed a friend casting and selling some. I told her I was interested in buying one for him but after taking some metalsmithing courses I thought it'd be more meaningful to make one myself.
I would come across these yellow plastic adapters all over the house and for anyone who knows me or my family they know that finding these kinds of things "around the house" is considered normal. Most of the time I would find them with dads desk stuff or mom's boxed up art supplies but either way I remember thinking it was cool to use their 45 adapters.

Well of course I messed up trying to cast the original piece. Casting involves math and I didn't do the equation correctly to find out how much metal I needed.

I ended up loving the "mess up" as it is normal for me to find better inspiration from my mistakes than to follow through with any original idea.

The 45 Adapter represents many things but it ultimately represents a transition between something old (vinyl record) with something new (turntable). It was an important piece in combining a new technology.

The pendant didn't turn out how my father wanted it to but it turned into something I found just as beautiful. It didn't represent his history of rock and roll but it would represent (my)present-day appreciation for his era of musical nostalgia. It may be a distorted symbol to those who understand the history of the adapter but an interesting or beautiful symbol to those who don't.

The SD45 Adapter is casted in brass
with sterling silver chain and findings
which will be coming soon to

American Rock Poster Art

I love vintage concert posters and the art that went into them before the use of adobe photoshop/illustrator etc.

The movie "American Artifact: The Rise of American Rock Poster Art" comes out on DVD March 27, 2010. It explains the making of concert posters with screenprinting/other mediums and the passion behind it. There are interviews with several artists and musicologists about the time period and the art that went into concert promotion.

(There are movie screenings in different states that you can check on their site here.)

Here are some true vintage 1-color posters and calendars done in pen and ink and paper cut-outs by late artist, Rosalie Love Weeden. They were done specifically for The Chance (formerly known as The Last Chance Saloon) and The Mid-Hudson Civic Center---both in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

(You can click the pictures to see close-ups of the hand rendered fonts and graphics.)

Nail Art

When I was younger I had a friend who always got her nails done with little hearts and flowers on them. Mom never really thought it was necessary to spend money on when it was something she could do for me or could teach me to do myself.

I was so excited for my first-time manicure when she let me go with my friend for a special occasion.

I wasn't so excited when it chipped the next day and realized Mom could've done just as good a job. She bought me the klutz "Nail Art" book and that's probably around the time my nail polish obsession began.

Nothing wrong with feeling like you're in 5th grade again! ☺

// the BLAKROC revolution ☮

album release today...NOVEMBER 27th..."black friday"

Rock/HipHop collaboration with Ohio blues/rock band The Black Keys (Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney) and hiphop artists Mos Def, Q-Tip, RZA, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Raekwon, Ludacris, Pharoahe Monch, Jim Jones, NOE, Nicole Wray and Billy Danze.

Aside from the music and collaborative efforts, everything about the whole project screams creativity.

The photography, webisodes, videos--all parts involved have a great ear and a great eye.

It's a beautiful thing to see such different genres working together. You hear mash-ups everywhere with DJ's mixing new age music with old rock classics but this is the real thing.

You can see the heart and soul that goes into it and it's a great way to get different generations or groups of people appreciating a genre they may not normally listen to...

Check out the BLAKROC website for current updates, radio streaming, webisodes and more.
